The Rugali Washing Station (often nicknamed "Big Daddy") is one of the most prominent and innovative coffee processing sites in Rwanda. It is located in the Nyamasheke District of the Western Province, situated on the scenic shores of Lake Kivu.
- Elevation: High altitude between 1,550 and 1,800 meters above sea level, which produces dense beans with complex acidity.
- Coffee Variety: Exclusively Red Bourbon, the classic high-quality Arabica variety of Rwanda.
- Scale: It is a massive operation, collecting coffee cherries from over 1,150 smallholder farmers in the surrounding hills.
- Experimental Processing: Rugali was one of the first stations in Rwanda granted permission to produce Natural and Honey processed coffees (historically, Rwanda almost exclusively produced "Fully Washed" coffee).
- In-House Milling: It features its own dry mill, allowing the team to maintain strict quality control from the moment the cherry is picked until the green beans are bagged for export.
- Flavor Profile: Coffee from Rugali is famous for being juicy and syrupy. You will often taste notes of dark berries (currant, plum), butterscotch, and black tea.
The station isn't just a factory; it's a community hub. Every Wednesday, the Rugali grounds transform into a vibrant local market where farmers trade livestock and produce. This integration makes Rugali a vital economic engine for the Nyamasheke region.
