Nestled in the rich, volcanic soils of Tanzania, Burka Coffee Estate has a storied history that dates back to its establishment in 1899 by German settlers. Although the first coffee trees were planted in 1918, it was after World War I that the estate experienced its first major transition, coming under British management. In 1929, a group of Swiss investors purchased the estate, marking the beginning of a new era. Over the decades, Burka has become renowned for producing high-quality coffee, expanding in 1990 by acquiring the neighboring Selian Coffee Estate.
The estate prides itself not only on its rich history and top-quality coffee but also on its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Using advanced agronomic practices and premium field inputs, Burka Coffee Estate ensures high yields while maintaining environ- mental balance. The coffee is grown under a traditional agroforestry system, where shade from indigenous trees protects the crops and contributes to a healthier ecosystem.
One of the estate’s hallmarks is its community-oriented approach. Burka Coffee Estate employs over 200 workers during harvest season and invests in their development through training programs. The estate has also built a nursery school for the workers’ children, offering free education. Additionally, employees benefit from free irrigation, gardens, pension lands, and housing. A close- knit, supportive community has formed around these initiatives, creating a positive social impact that extends beyond coffee production.
Economically, the estate supports local livelihoods by providing stable jobs, housing, and medical services, fostering a strong sense of community among its workers. Environmental stewardship is also a priority. The estate’s agroforestry practices not only sustain coffee production but also protect the surrounding natural resources, such as the natural springs that give the estate its name. These springs not only irrigate the coffee fields but also provide water for nearby communities.
In addition to traditional practices, Burka Coffee Estate integrates modern technologies to ensure the quality of its coffees remains consistent. After harvesting, the cherries are promptly pulped and fermented, while a sophisticated washing process separates beans by density to ensure the best flavours.
